Last summer, I had the chance to visit the ThermoWorks headquarters in Utah to learn more about the company that makes one of my favorite thermometers, the Thermapen. During that visit, the company unveiled its latest product, its first truly wireless thermometer called the RFX Wireless. They said it was going to not only change the way we used thermometers because it had capabilities we’d never seen before.
ThermoWorks also claimed the RFX was more precise and reliable. Many wireless thermometers use Bluetooth technology, typically spotty in some houses made with certain construction materials such as steel and concrete. But ThermoWorks is banking on RF technology and its dedicated RFX gateways. A video demonstration by a professional chef showed how the probes were used to cook. He also tested the reaches of the RFX’s impressive range, which is supposed to reach up to 1,500 feet without losing connection.

When I started my test, I found the setup easy, but the app needed work. The starter set includes only a probe and gateway, but you can select sets with up to four probes. You can also add other probes a la carte. You can wirelessly connect up to an astounding 50 probes to the gateway. That means no excessive cables or anything else to contend with: just a sleek probe and the app once the gateway is set up. The sets also have an external Pro-Series Air Probe to monitor the ambient temperature for superior precision, a grate clip, a charging block (one 10-minute charge lasts 52 hours), a power adapter, a USB cable, and probe rings.
I was shocked at how much more I could do with this thermometer than others I have had in the past. As long as you keep the temperature under 1,000°F, it can work with a variety of applications. You can use it for deep frying, baking, sous vide, or roasting. You can get accurate reads on the center of cakes as they bake — a feature fellow bakers will love — or for steaks in an immersion circulator. Another selling point is the air probe that monitors the ambient temperature. ThermoWorks claims its probe is more accurate than competitors’ because it connects directly to the gateway, eliminating any potential interference.
The RFX is certified food-safe by the NSF (The National Science Foundation), which means it is safe to leave in a piece of meat as it cooks. Still, the best thing, aside from the multifunctionality, is how easy it is to clean and maintain. You only need to clean the probe since it’s dishwasher-safe — a game-changer since most thermometers are handwash only. With its multifunctionality, scalability, and design, I am just beginning to explore everything this thermometer can do. It’s a must-have for any Thermapen fan.
