This week, there’s so much in store across all the major streaming services, like Angelina Jolie’s latest film, Maria, in which she plays opera star Maria Callas, releasing on Netflix this Wednesday, to the return of some old faves like the Dexter prequel, Dexter: Original Sin on Paramount Plus, and Paris & Nicole: The Encore on Peacock.
Also on Netflix this week, you can catch Jamie Foxx in a new comedy special What Had Happened Was…, where the Oscar-winner addresses his recent health issues, watch the Blake Lively drama It Ends With Us, and you can check out two new holiday episodes of The Great British Baking Show: Holidays, too.
On Max, a new season of Chuck Lorre’s Bookie arrives, and on Disney Plus, tune into the documentary Elton John: It’s Never Too Late, a tribute to the Rocketman’s five decades in the music industry, or Dream Productions, the new series spun-off from Inside Out.

Best new shows and movies to stream (Dec. 9 to Dec. 15)
Netflix
The soprano Maria Callas — perhaps the greatest and most influential opera diva of the 20th century — lives out her final days secluded in Paris in Pablo Larraín’s latest film. Angelina Jolie stars as Callas, whose black-and-white remembrances are intertwined with lushly filmed Parisian days spent connecting with her devoted staff while dodging fans and the press. Alongside Jackie and Spencer, it’s the third in director Pablo Larraín’s unofficial trilogy about great women and their complicated relationships with their own fame. Streams on Netflix starting Dec. 11.
Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was… (Dec. 10)
In April of 2023, Oscar and Grammy winner Jamie Foxx was hospitalized with a serious medical condition that started with a bad headache and ended with him “missing” 20 days of his life. The cause of the emergency has remained a mystery, but it forms the basis of his return to stand-up comedy. Foxx has said that when he tells the story of what happened that night, he wants to “do it in a funny way,” and his focus here was “If I can stay funny, I can stay alive.” Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was… comes to Netflix on Dec. 10.
The Great British Baking Show: Holidays: Season 7 (Dec. 9)
Our favorite cozy holiday tradition continues, as the Great British Baking Show once again brings its special holiday edition to Netflix. These are always a fun way to bring back some past fan favorites for a more relaxed festive bake, and the 2024 edition sees the return of several fan favorites from past seasons. Of course, Paul and his jeans and Prue and her accessories will be there too. Two new holiday-themed episodes stream on Netflix starting Dec. 9.
It Ends With Us may have gotten more press this year from the simmering on-set drama between the film’s two leads, Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, than for the actual film itself. Based on the Colleen Hoover bestseller, the film is about a woman named Lily (Lively) who becomes involved with an abusive man, Ryle (Baldoni). Having grown up in an abusive household, Lily is conflicted about her love for the man responsible for causing her so much pain, vowing to her young daughter that she will break that cycle (hence the title). After a successful theatrical run this summer, it arrives to Netflix on Dec. 9.
You know what they say about flying: keep calm and use your carry-on. That’s sort of (not really) the premise of the new Netflix thriller Carry-On, about a TSA agent desperate to outsmart a terrorist — on Christmas Eve, no less! Taron Egerton stars as TSA agent Ethan Kopek, who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveler (played by Jason Bateman in one of his most sinister roles) and is forced to comply with the man’s demands to allow a dangerous package on-board a flight. In a race against (departure) time, a cat-and-mouse game between the two men plays out as Ethan attempts to thwart disaster. This in-flight entertainment arrives on Dec. 13.
One Hundred Years Of Solitude (Dec. 11)
Based on the 1967 magical realism masterpiece by Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude is the story of the Buendía family, whose patriarch, José Arcadio Buendía, founded the fictitious, utopian town of Macondo. The Netflix series based on the novel will be released in two parts; the first eight episodes arrive on Dec. 11, but a release date for part two has not yet been announced.
Paramount Plus
Dexter: Original Sin (Dec. 13)
A prequel to Showtime’s long-running Dexter, about a vigilante serial killer, Original Sin traces the origins of its title character as he transitions from student to murderous avenger. Set in 1991 Miami, it stars Patrick Gibson (The OA) as a young Dexter Morgan, newly interning with the Miami PD/CSI and quickly losing the ability to suppress his dark urges. Fortunately, his father, Harry (Christian Slater), is there to instill some old-fashioned values and show him how to kill the ones who really deserve it. Original Dexter Michael C. Hall is the series’ narrator; Patrick Dempsey, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Christina Milian costar. The series premieres on Paramount Plus on Dec. 13.
Disney Plus
Elton John: Never Too Late (Dec. 13)
Just weeks after news broke that Elton John has lost his vision — he says he struggled to see the final edit — Elton John: Never Too Late arrives as a tribute to the legacy of the 20th century rock icon. John is front and center in the documentary, looking back on his early days, his unprecedented decision to come out in 1976 via Rolling Stone magazine, and a staggering 50-year recording and performing career. Filled with never-before-seen footage and some newly unearthed historical audio, Never Too Late comes to Disney Plus on Dec. 13.
Dream Productions (Dec. 11)
An animated mockumentary-style series set in the world of Inside Out — which also means it’s set in the mind of Riley, the movies’ protagonist — Dream Productions focuses on Paula Persimmon (Paula Pell), Riley’s struggling “dream director.” As Riley gets older, she needs more age-appropriate dreams; her glitter-filled visions of Rainbow Unicorn just aren’t up to the emotional task anymore. Enter Xeni (Richard Ayoade), an ambitious daydream director who’s looking to make his mark. The two have wildly different personalities and visions for what Riley needs. Can they put aside their differences to become a true dream team? Returning Inside Out voice actors include Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Tony Hale, Lewis Black and more. Dream Productions starts streaming on Dec. 11.
Prime Video
Secret Level is a fascinating experiment, as each episode of the animated anthology series is set in the universe of a popular video game franchise, telling a new, original story based upon that particular IP. Aimed at an adult audience, the collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Blur Studio (creators of Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots) will focus on a wide range of gaming properties, from Pac-Man to Armored Core and Spelunky to Warhammer 40,000. The 15-episode series comes to Prime Video on Dec. 10.
Max
Bookie Season 2 (Dec. 12)
Set in the world of underground sports betting, the Max original comedy Bookie returns for its second season this week. Created by Chuck Lorre, it follows bookie Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco) as he deals with the aftereffects of legalized gambling and an increasingly odd collection of clients. Expect lots of big-name actors to drop by, including Charlie Sheen (playing himself), Ray Romano, Zach Braff and Brad Garrett. Season 1 guest star Rob Corddry (The Daily Show, Hot Tub Time Machine) has been promoted to series regular. Episode one streams on Max Dec. 12 at 9 p.m. ET.
Peacock
Paris & Nicole: The Encore (Dec. 12)
It’s been more than 20 years (how?) since Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie first starred in The Simple Life. The two women — now both moms whose personal lives have done a full 180 from their original image as trouble-making party girls — have reunited for the Peacock original Paris & Nicole: The Encore. The three-part series is more of a reunion than a reboot. The pair aren’t hitting the road to live the simple life, instead they’re trying to produce an operatic performance based on their self-coined phrase, “Sanasa.” The show debuts on Peacock Dec. 12.
