Venom is Going Gold and Getting a New Mysterious Meatsuit

Estimated read time 3 min read

Since 2017, Marvel’s boosted Venom into one of its A-list characters and made sure to have him headline a comic event every now and then. Right now, Eddie Brock and his son Dylan are going head-to-head in the pages of “Venom War,” and once that wraps, a new era for the character will kick off. The twist? It won’t be either of the Brocks in the title role.

Days ago, Polygon formally announced Al Ewing and Carlos Gómez’ upcoming series, All-New Venom. While Eddie will be seemingly MIA, Dylan will be investigating the new fella that the Symbiote’s partnered up with. This is a mystery story with the teen Brock operating as a detective of sorts, and there’s already four suspects narrowed down as potential candidates: New York mayor Luke Cage, Daily Bugle staple Robbie Robertson, villain Madame Masque, and longtime Hulk ally Rick Jones. Ewing said each of them has a “nice possibility” for being the new host, like Masque’s “big plans” after the “Gang War” event and Robbie looking to solve problms a la Superman, and the hope is that readers won’t immediately finger the suspect.

Regardless of who’s in the goo, All-New is Venom at the street level once again after the last few runs (some of which were from Ewing and cowriter Ram V) were so cosmic-heavy. “It’s more like a Spider-Man-level story,” he explained. And with a focus on character and “ground-level superhero action,” he teased that this new lethal protector will be fighting like street heroes do. “This Venom doesn’t fight like we’ve seen [him] before. […] We can pull off all kinds of exciting new tricks and fun new things, right from issue one.”

For readers who’ve been reading Ewing’s work for a long time, he likened All-New Venom to old-school superhero comics, and a way for him to flex his creative muscles. “Venom demands some degree of craziness and wildness and fun,” he said. “And I think All-New Venom is going to embrace that even more.”

All-New Venom will kick off in December.
