After years of playing hypercompetent men who often save the world, Tom Cruise has jumped ship from Paramount over to Warner Bros. to…play a hypercompetent man who will save the world.
On Friday, Deadline provided a brief plot synopsis for Cruise’s upcoming, currently untitled movie he’s making with Alejandro G. Iñàrritu. According to the outlet, the film focuses on “the most powerful man in the world,” and after unleashing a disaster on the world, it falls to him to prove his worth and stop it. That’s a very ominous premise, most of all because it’s unclear what said devastation is and whether or not he fully meant to put it out in the world in the first place. And what makes Cruise’s character the most powerful of them all? We’ll have to wait and find out.
Along with the logline, Deadline revealed a set of actors to join the film. Our supporing cast includes Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller, Killers of the Flower Moon’s Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), John Goodman (Righteous Gemstones), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Bones and All). There’s another potential get in Riz Ahmed (Nimona), who’s currently said to be in talks for the project. Like much else about the film, their roles in the story are tightly under wraps.
Whatever Iñàrritu and Cruise’s movie is, it’ll be a big deal. Cruise teamed with WB in January to develop and produce films, both of the original and franchise variety. As the first film of this new endeavor, this marks a significant point in his career. Maybe this leads to revisiting some fan favorite flicks, or maybe he attempts to challenge himself with newer material. Either way, color us interested in what he’ll do next on the big screen.
