Storage capacities are one of the few things that seems to actually be going down in price these days. It’s becoming easier and easier for engineers to deliver us more and more data in smaller and smaller packages. Just a handful of years ago, the thought of a single terabyte seemed like a joke. Now you can get twice that on a microSD card about a centimeter long.
Well, friends this might be the most affordable I’ve ever seen storage when looking at a per-byte level. Western Digital has a huge external hard drive capable of storing 20TB. Right now, Amazon has dropped it from its launch price of $550 to just $279. That works out to roughly a penny per gig. I guess about a penny and a half, but still. That’s incredible.
Plug-and-Play With a Generous Capacity
Setup is super easy, anyone can do it. Just plug the drive into a USB Type-A 3.0 or 2.0 port (you can use the included USB Type-A cable to do so) and then open your device’s file manager whether its File Explorer on Windows or Finder on a Mac. The drive should be an option to choose from now.
The WD Elements 20TB with its high capacity does need to some power to get working. Smaller drives are usually up and running just from the USB cable their connected to your computer with. This big one does use an AC adapter, but that just as simple as plugging it into the wall.
For use with a Mac, it does require formatting but that’s also pretty straight forward. Just plug in the drive and open up you Mac’s Disk Utility application and follow the steps there. Just make sure you are doing so first thing because any data already saved to the drive before formatting will be erased.
According to some of the FAQs on the product page, this massive 20TB hard drive does technically work with your Xbox or PlayStation console to store digital games on. However, it’s not recommended. Games require lightning-fast read/write times for loading—especially current gen titles. You best bet is the WD_BLACK D50 external SSD if gaming is your main appeal to tremendous storage.
