Like the game it’s based on, the Nier Automata anime is set thousands of years after humanity escaped to the moon and left human-like androids behind to fight in an endless conflict against robotic lifeforms created by a hostile alien civilization. The story follows androids 2B and 9S on a mind-bending mission that includes everything from action-packed fights against towering robots, to deep philosophical examinations of life–robotic or otherwise. While fans of the games will get a new, fleshed-out take on the storyline, the Nier Automata TV series is also perfect for newcomers who want to experience the acclaimed story in anime form. If you’re looking for more Nier content beyond the anime series and games, there are also several manga and novels written by series creator Yoko Taro that expand the fictional universe of Nier Automata and its prequel Nier Replicant.
