The Live-Action Snow White’s Trailer Asks For the Fairest Revolution of Them All

Estimated read time 3 min read

Disney’s endless quest to remake its own animated history continues with Snow White next year, but the story of an evil figure enthralled by their own beautification may have hit a little too close to home in that endeavour. So now, as the new film’s latest trailer shows us, this latest rendition of the classic animated film is now about more than just the Evil Queen’s machinations against Snow White, but instead… the latter leading a people’s revolution?

Yes, in the chase to make this Snow White bigger, and better (and in the case of the CG seven dwarves, a little more horrifying to look at) than the 1937 icon, it seems like Marc Webb’s film is going to be as much Les Mis as it is Snow White, as we get to see more of the Evil Queen’s totalitarian regime cracking down on the kingdom in the wake of her attempts to stop her magic mirror gaslighting her over Snow White’s own beauty. It’s… certainly a choice!

There’s definitely a lot going on here to try and make this remake its own thing compared to the original, but it’s largely in invoking scale and gravity rather than anything particularly additive. The Dwarves’ jewel mine is bigger and brighter, the magical forest is grander and more twisted, the Evil Queen’s plans bolder and more all-encompassing. We do, at least (in between a few invocations of “Whistle While You Work” and its, well, whistling) get to hear a little more of some the actually additive material here in the form of snippets of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s original songs made for the movie, but still: we kind of know what to expect out of Disney’s relitigation of its own past at this point, and Snow White definitely feels like it’s leaning more into being another one of those rather than making the case for its existence apart from what is arguably one of the most legendary of Disney’s animated back catalogue.

Snow White hits theaters March 21, 2025.
