Instead of shipping its pop in plastic bags, Coca-Cola delivers its syrup to McDonald’s in stainless steel tanks that keep it fresh and full of flavor.

An Exceptional Water Filtration System

Before the Coca-Cola delivery even occurs, McDonald’s is prepping for its arrival. The restaurant has a special filtration system to ensure all drinking water—including the one in the soda fountain—is the cleanest and freshest it can be. It’s also why McDonald’s beverages taste the same between U.S. locations.

The Pre-Chilling Method

Once the Coca-Cola syrups have been delivered to McDonald’s, the employees don’t just install them right into the fountain. Instead, they pre-chill both the syrup and the water to ensure the soda is always ice cold when it comes out of the fountain. 

To keep the water chilled, McDonald’s runs an insulated tube from the fridge to the fountain that keeps the water just above freezing. 

So, instead of the fountain dispensing slightly cool pop like at most fast food restaurants, McDonald’s will always be at its coldest when it enters your cup, even without any ice. However, you don’t want to skip the ice, either.

The Perfect Ratio

McDonald’s and Coca-Cola have thought of everything, all the way down to the cubes in your cup. The fast food restaurant sets its syrup-to-water ratio a little heavier on the syrup than most chains to account for melting ice. Even as the cubes liquify, they won’t water down your perfectly sweet soda.

That also means you shouldn’t order a Mickey D’s Diet Coke without ice or with light ice—you don’t want to mess with perfection.

A Final Straw

The final touch on the soda is McDonald’s straw. Mickey D’s says its straw is designed slightly wider to allow the pop to hit all your taste buds so you experience the crisp, sweetness across your entire palate.

So, there you have it. Despite people claiming that McDonald’s has an exclusive Diet Coke recipe, it’s actually that the fast food chain has its soda-making method down to a science.

Considering all those crucial parts, it’s no wonder that other fast food chains can’t replicate the magic that is McDonald’s Diet Coke. They can certainly try, but the Mickey D loyalists will always head to the Golden Arches for their Diet Coke fix.
