Subway Is Coming for Taco Bell With Its Newest Menu Item

Estimated read time 3 min read

In 2008, Subway launched one of the most iconic campaigns in the food world: $5 footlongs. The jingle, which is probably playing in your head right now, launched the sandwich shop even further into the spotlight as the leading alternative to greasy fast food chains. However, much to the dismay of fans, the beloved $5 value meal was discontinued less than a decade later due to rising market costs.

The Connecticut-founded chain hasn’t been able to return to its low pricing for sandwiches, but it has been hard at work creating a variety of other items, such as footlong sidekicks and footlong dippers, to bring guests more value.

Now, a new footlong meal could be joining the lineup, but fans have mixed feelings about the potential menu item.

Subway Could Be Testing Doritos Footlong Nachos Soon

Internet rumors are flying that Subway, known for its “Eat Fresh” slogan, could be testing out Doritos Footlong Nachos, however, Subway has not yet confirmed this information. We first learned about the drop from food insider @snackolator, who recently shared the news with followers.

“Subway is getting wild with the footlong menu with Doritos Footlong Nachos! They are currently being tested in a number of stores around the country and feature Doritos…topped with melted cheese, meat, toppings, and some additional sauces,” wrote the Instagrammer in the caption.

The post goes on to say that Subway has been testing the footlong nachos in the U.S. and Canada, but we will have to wait until spring for a potential nationwide release.

The comments were understandably torn over the idea of nachos from a sandwich shop. Some were angry that Subway has not taken more time to improve its sandwiches, while others appreciated having more options. “I think it’s a great idea! I’m not particularly a fan of nachos, but members of my family are. It would be nice for them to have an alternative, besides a salad, when I want a sub and they don’t. Great idea,” wrote one user.

You might be surprised to learn that the idea of Subway nachos isn’t entirely new either. For years, Subway workers have been whipping up their own version as a snack. In a Reddit thread titled “Subway Nachos, The Best Thing That You (Customers) Can’t Order,” commenters detailed which ingredients they used. “I did something similar to this, I had a walking taco like every week when I worked. Crushed up a bag of Doritos, put in some steak, lettuce, banana peppers, shredded cheese, chipotle southwest, and anything else; it was my favorite (of course only when my boss wasn’t in the store),” wrote one worker.

It’s not yet clear whether or not Subway Footlong Nachos will actually hit menus this spring, so we’ll be watching for any updates. In the meantime, maybe Taco Bell will take a hint and release its own version.
