The game is far from over for Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game Season 2.
In what could only be described as a genius display of timing on the marketing side of media, Netflix has released an official teaser trailer for Squid Game Season 2 on Halloween.
Squid Game season 2 sees Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun return to the death game tournament that nearly claimed his life in Netflix’s Emmy award-winning first season. Like in the first season, season 2 sees Gi-hun return to the dystopian schoolyard-game-inspired survival competition as player 456. For folks wondering why Gi-hun would change his mind from the first season, which saw him dye his hair red as he was about to board a trip to the States, the show’s official synopsis clears things up by saying he had a new resolution in mind. Perhaps it is to destroy the games from the inside (sans red hair).
While Squid Game Season 2 promises a new crop of faces to either cheer for or wish for their untimely demise because of how cruel their egoist tactics are, the show also promises to bring along some familiar faces from the previous season. Key among them are Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man, Wi Ha-jun as the virtuous police detective Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the slap-happy Salesman.
Season 2’s new faces include actors Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyung, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Wong Ji-an. But again, don’t get too comfortable seeing any of the above faces because, if the first season is anything to go off of, they won’t be sticking around very long.
Squid Game is not only a ratings success story for Netflix, the streamer also reported that it yielded “over 1.65 billion viewing hours in 28 days, and reached 111 million accounts, becoming Netflix’s first series to surpass 100 million members at launch.” The show quickly became a pop cultural phenomenon with Halloween costumes, homages in Futurama, and a reality show that super missed its cautionary premise called Squid Game: The Challenge.
Regarding bragging rights and accolades, Squid Game made history at the Emmys with 14 nominations and six wins. It became the first non-English language show to win the Outstanding Drama series nomination and director-writer-producer Hwang Dong-hyuk and Lee became “the first Asians and the first South Koreans to win in their respective categories, and the first to do so with a non-English language series,” according to Netflix. Fingers crossed, Squid Game sees a repeat of its past successes.
Squid Game Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on December 26. The third and final season is slated to be released sometime in 2025.
