In 2010, Shrek Forever After was supposedly the end of the main Shrek franchise, not counting the two Puss in Boots spin-off films and animated series that followed. However, the fan favorite ogre is poised for a comeback. Eddie Murphy has revealed that voice recording for Shrek 5 has already begun, and a spin-off film for his character, Donkey, is also on the agenda.

“We started doing [Shrek 5] four or five months ago,” said Murphy during an interview with Collider. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [film].”

Murphy also clarified that the Donkey spin-off movie hasn’t started production yet, and it will be the next film after Shrek 5. “I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next,” said Murphy.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri actually revealed the existence of Shrek 5 last year during an interview with Variety. At the time, the original voice cast including Murphy, Mike Myers, and Cameron Diaz were only in negotiations to return. DreamWorks Animation hasn’t formally announced that Shrek 5 is coming yet. But if Murphy is back as Donkey, it stands to reason that Myers and Diaz are also reprising their respective roles as Shrek and Fiona.
