2021 premium revenue was up sharply from 2020.
Today, top-level domain company Radix issued its Premiums report (pdf) for the second half of 2021.
The company reported $2.98 million in retail premium revenue, a record for any half-year. It was slightly above the first half of 2021 when it reported $2.91 million. All told, Radix estimates that retail revenue for its premium domains grossed nearly $6 million in 2021, up significantly from about $4 million in 2020.
Radix itself keeps a portion of this; it estimates the gross revenue based on what registrars charge.
Note that Radix charges a higher-than-normal fee for the initial premium registration and renewals.
For H2 2021, .tech was the top TLD for new premium registrations. The top 3 were:
.tech – 332 new premiums – $335k
.store – 290 new premiums – $247k
.online – 202 new premiums – $171k
These three are also the most valuable from a renewal revenue perspective, although .online is stronger than .store:
.tech – $477k renewal revenue
.online – $447k renewal revenue
.store – $310k renewal revenue
70% of premiums sell for $500 or less. At the other end of the spectrum, Radix sold 16 domains in H2 2021 at about $10,000 retail and two at $25,000 retail.
GoDaddy accounted for 40% of the new premium registrations, followed by Namecheap (22%) and Google (11%).
