Eight years ago, Luke Lorick, a self-described “tailgating aficionado” and founder of the Tailgating Challenge, worked with the calendar-keepers at National Day to establish a National Tailgating Day. In 2016, his celebration of all things tailgate — especially football-related tailgates — became an official thing, which is celebrated every year on the first Saturday of September.
This year’s National Tailgating Day falls on Saturday, September 7 and, in addition to a full schedule of college football games, Popeyes is launching a new Wings Tailgate Bundle that day too. From now through Sunday, September 15, winglovers can pick up this deal, which includes 24 wings — either boneless or bone-in — three regular sides, and four cup-sized dips. (Popeyes has nicknamed itself “The Official Wing of Watching Football,” and this combo definitely leans into that).
The Wings Tailgate Bundle sells for $24.99, and is available for purchase in-store at participating Popeyes restaurants across the country, through the Popeyes App, or on Popeyes.com.
In late August, Popeyes launched its newest wing flavor, Sweet ‘N’ Smokey Chipotle, which is a balanced blend of Chipotle chiles, guajillo chiles, and a bit of honey. And, again, the Louisiana-inspired chain is leaning hard into how well its wings pair with the old pigskin.
“Football is all about bringing people together, and at Popeyes, we believe that great food is at the heart of those moments,” Bart LaCount, Popeyes U.S. and Canada’s chief marketing officer, said when the newest wings debuted. “[W]e’re making it easier than ever for fans to enjoy the game with a flavor-packed spread that’s sure to be the MVP of any gathering.”
As of this writing, Popeyes wings’ come in seven different flavors: Ghost Pepper, Honey BBQ, Honey Lemon Pepper, Roasted Garlic Parmesan, Signature Hot, Sweet ‘N’ Smokey Chipotle, and Sweet ‘N’ Spicy. Its boneless wings are available in Classic, Honey BBQ, Honey Lemon Pepper, Roasted Garlic Parmesan, Signature Hot, Sweet ‘N’ Smokey, and Sweet ‘N’ Spicy.
Earlier this year, Popeyes pledged to give away free chicken wings if either a “winged” NFL team or the Buffalo Bills won the Super Bowl. The chain’s “Wings for Wings” promotion would’ve given all of us a free six-piece order of wings if the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, or the Bills (because of Buffalo’s connection to chicken wing history) won the big game. Unfortunately for all of us, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers knocked the Eagles out of the playoffs, while the Kansas City Chiefs took down both Buffalo and Baltimore on its way to its second straight Super Bowl win.
Hopefully, Popeyes will come up with some kind of Chiefs-related offer this year. Until then, we’ve got a solid week to hit that Wings Tailgate Bundle pretty hard.
