Pizza Hut Is Releasing Pizza Caviar

Pizza Hut wants to help make your pizza night a little fancier. 

On Wednesday, May 9, the pizza chain announced its plans to launch Pizza Caviar, which it calls a “first-of-its-kind innovation” meant to elevate the “world’s most beloved comfort foods.” 

But this innovative topping isn’t the kind of caviar you might be envisioning.

Pizza Hut is launching a product meant to “replicate the look and feel of traditional caviar,” without any fish involved. According to the brand, jars of the treat are filled with tiny balls of Pizza Caviar that deliver a “smoky pepperoni flavor.” These spheres are crafted from pepperoni-flavored water and agar agar, a plant-based, gelatin-like thickening agent made from red seaweed.

Although putting real caviar on pizza might be the more obvious choice, the brand says in a press release that it posed the question: “Why just place caviar on your pizza when you can reimagine it entirely and create a bold new food category?”

Pizza Hut explains that the new creation was inspired by the increasing popularity of “caviar bumps,” where diners down a bite of plain caviar straight off the back of their hand. Consequently the pizza chain’s own caviar balls aren’t just designed for topping chips or pizza, but also for “dipping, dunking, and bumping.”

“As a brand that’s always pushing the boundaries of what pizza culture can be, we saw an opportunity to take one of today’s biggest food trends and make it our own,” Melissa Friebe, the chief marketing officer of Pizza Hut, shared in a statement provided to Food & Wine. “Pizza Caviar is our way of bringing a touch of indulgence while staying true to the flavors people love from Pizza Hut.”

If you want to try the Pizza Caviar for yourself, you do need to be located in New York City — or maybe take a last-minute trip — because it’s exclusively available at the Pizza Hut at 932 8th Avenue in NYC.

To score some of the pepperoni-flavored delicacies from this location, you just need to order the new Pizza Caviar Bump Box, which includes one cheese Personal Pan Pizza and a choice of three plain boneless wings or fries, and of course every item comes topped with spheres of Pizza Caviar.

Make sure you act fast, as the Pizza Caviar Bump Box will only be available for a limited time. Fans can purchase the special offering from April 10 to April 12 between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., while supplies last.
