Ore-Ida Is Giving Away Free Tater Tots

In case you’re unaware, March Madness is underway. The annual NCAA college basketball tournament is usually great to watch for the surprises on the court, but this year, one of those surprises had nothing to do with the game itself. An announcer casually dropped the info that Brigham Young University (BYU) forward Richie Saunders is the great-grandson of Ore-Ida founder F. “Nephi” Griggs.

Not only did the Cougar’s great-grandfather start the potato company, he invented one of our favorite ways for potatoes to be prepared (perhaps second only to mashed potatoes), the Tater Tot. Basically, Great Grandpop Griggs is a food hero if there ever was one.

Now that the tot is out of the bag, so to speak, Ore-Ida is recognizing the connection between the college basketball player and the humble, but delicious, Tater Tot by giving away free tots every time BYU wins during March Madness.

How To Claim Your Free Tater Tots

Ore-Ida has officially signed Saunders to a formal NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deal. To celebrate, for each game BYU wins during the college tournament, Ore-Ida will give away free Tater Tots nationwide immediately after the final buzzer sounds. That means you get free tots to top with bacon and cheese to make loaded Tater Tots, turn into a breakfast casserole, use as the base for nachos, or simply dump on a sheet pan, bake, and enjoy.

If BYU wins, Ore-Ida will start a “Tot Clock” for 30 minutes after the game. Fans can click on the link in Ore-Ida’s Instagram bio and claim an offer for free tots. The offer can be redeemed for any 4.5-ounce, 28-ounce, 30-ounce, or 32-ounce Ore-Idea Tater Tot product up to $8 at select retailers nationwide.

Ore-Ida’s first Tot Clock already ran when BYU won its game against VCU on March 20. The BYU Cougars are next scheduled to play in the tournament on March 22 at 7:45 p.m. EST. If the team beats the Wisoncson Badgers, as soon as the game is done, the free tot deal opens up for a half hour. If BYU loses, they’re out of the tournament, and, unfortunately, we all lose out on a chance to get free tots.

So, say it with us: “Go Cougars!”
