The next trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s newest movie, Trap, has arrived. Trap tells the story of a serial killer played by Josh Hartnett who attends a pop concert with his teenage daughter, later discovering the whole thing is a set-up–to catch him.
Shyamalan’s movies are known for their twist endings, so while this trailer–and the one that came before it–looks like it gives a lot away in terms of the plot, there is presumably more under the surface.
In addition to Hartnett, the movie features Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka Shyamalan as the pop artist in question, Lady Raven, and the movie doubles as a giant advertisement for her new album.
Shyamalan told Empire that he pitched Trap as “What if The Silence Of The Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?” He also said the film was inspired by “Operation Flagship,” which was a real-life sting operation in 1985 where the government offered fugitives NFL tickets and a chance to go to the Super Bowl–only the whole thing was a trap.
While not all of Shyamalan’s movies are universally enjoyed, they are authentic, or at least that’s the aim. “I really do believe in the original movie,” he said. “I want the industry to move towards more original storytelling. I think audiences would really like it. Look, I know there’s safety in IP. But it’s really important that we come to the movies and see something we’ve never seen before.”
Shyamalan earned multiple Academy Award nominations for the movie The Sixth Sense. He also directed the films Unbreakable, Signs, Lady in the Water, The Visit, Split, Glass, Old. His most recent release before Trap was 2023’s Knock at the Cabin.
Shyamalan doesn’t just work on spooky thrillers, as he also co-wrote 1999’s Stuart Little.
