Id Software’s iconic Doom video game series is set to continue with the announcement of the next entry in the series during the Xbox Games Showcase in June, according to reports. The Verge’s Tom Warren slyly referenced a future Doom announcement in a recent report about Xbox’s recent issues.

“Microsoft will be banking on some new game announcements lifting the Doom around Xbox,” Warren reported, styling the word doom in that manner to seemingly reference the game series. Eurogamer reported that had “heard similar” things related to a Doom announcement in June.

Id Software developed 2020’s Doom Eternal, the latest entry in the main series. The mobile game Mighty Doom released in 2023 and was made by Alpha Dog Games. Microsoft recently closed the studio as part of a wider shakeup. Mighty Doom will go offline in August.

In January this year, ZeniMax filed a trademark application for “IDKFA,” which is an iconic classic Doom cheat code. Whether or not this is related to a new game announcement is unknown.

Doom Eternal had a positive critical reception upon launch in 2020. It was released on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch consoles, as well as PC. Microsoft now owns Bethesda, id Software, and the Doom series, but it’s unclear if any future releases in the franchise would be exclusive to Xbox on console.

The Xbox Games Showcase on June 9 promises game announcements and other reveals. The event will be followed by a second briefing focused on a different game, and it’s expected to be the next Call of Duty.

It’s been a rocky 2024 for Xbox so far, as Microsoft laid off more than 1,900 people this year and closed four Bethesda studios.
