I liked GoDaddy’s auction, but I also have some suggestions for improving it.Auctioneer next to an easel with ".com" next to it and four people in the audience raising their paddles.
GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY) ran auctions of some of its NameFind inventory on GoDaddy Auctions for the past couple of weeks.
I think it was wise for GoDaddy to run this auction for a couple of reasons.
First, we know from experience that end-of-year auctions to domain investors can be successful. Many domain investors take money off the table at the end of the year to lower their taxes, depending on how their business is structured and where they are located. Thought Convergence held a highly successful auction at the end of 2021 and I think the end-of-year timing was instrumental to the success.
Second, this auction should help GoDaddy pad its aftermarket results for Q4. I suspect that’s why it ran this auction.
Here are some things I like about how GoDaddy ran the auction:
Here are some things I’d like GoDaddy to do differently if it runs another NameFind auction:
Overall, I was happy to pick up a couple of nice domains to finish 2024.

Any idea why they didn’t get listed on Namebio?
says
Maybe NameBio is only tracking the expiry auctions and this was a separate auction?
says
Any idea how much ScapeGoat.com sold for? Cliche.com? Or any other of the one worders you were outbid on, you wish you had more money in “war chest”?
Thanks as always, Andrew! I’m glad you came out winning some nice ones. This is my favorite analysis by you, yet.
says
Cliche went for 15,450. Not sure about scapegoat because I didn’t bid on that domain. I would have bid more on oew.com. (which closed at 14,250) had I not got caught up with something else.
says
Correct, we only track their expiry auctions. The way we get the data doesn’t show if an auction has a reserve and whether or not it was met, so we can’t track their regular auctions automatically (at least not in a respectful manner).

so for me i really appreciate your post, tells me this was a wholesale auction. a retail auction at scale is still an illusion. hopefully this data doesnt go into appraisals, if so said those are supposed to be retail.
and adding supply doesnt increase demand or prices if done haphazzardly
great reporting as always
