Moana 2 Crashes Into D23 With a New Trailer

Estimated read time 2 min read

It wasn’t that long ago that we’d learned a Moana 2 was coming out this year, and it’s not that far from hitting theaters. During tonight’s D23 panel, Disney brought a new trailer for the upcoming sequel in tow, and it looks every bit as grand an adventure as the original film.

Picking up a few years after the last film, Moana’s (Auli’i Cravalho) settled neatly into her Wayfinder duties of exploring the seas and connecting her home with other islands. When a shooting star gives the location of an island that could help make her task easier, she sets out with a crew to find it, and it’s not long before Maui (Dwayne Johnson) pops in to provide his specific brand of help. Getting there involves tangling with some new gods and other enemies, like an army of sentient coconuts. Y’know, normal Wayfinder stuff, plus the added duties of being a big sister, who Cravalho described as her character’s “whole world. When she’s not in big sis mode, she spends her time searching near by islands for evidence that there are more people.”

Apart from the new characters, the biggest change to Moana 2 comes from the music: Lin-Manuel Miranda won’t be back to handle the soundtrack, and that duty is instead being handled by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. So far, the only song that’s been revealed is called “We’re Back,” but during the presentation, Johnson assured that yes, he’d lend his voice to a tune or two once more. “Maui is singing again, and in keys that don’t exist,” he quipped.

Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27.
