Few things are more satisfying than a killer cup of fresh coffee that you made in your kitchen. If you’re a coffee connoisseur, you know the drill: You have your favorite local roaster or subscription, you’ve got your preferred brewing method (like pour-over, AeroPress, or drip), and you even have your favorite mug that you look forward to filling each morning. You seem to have it all figured out.
In my experience, however, the one thing coffee lovers tend to overlook is how they store their beans. I’ve been in kitchens where people are ordering extremely good beans from top-tier roasters like Onyx Coffee Lab or Counter Culture, and I was bummed to notice bags sitting out in direct sunlight, on top of ovens, or even unsealed. “One of the biggest mistakes I often see would be people cutting open their coffee bags and leaving them open, allowing all the important gasses to escape,” says Heather Perry, CEO of Klatch Coffee and former chair of the Barista Guild of America. Indeed, when beans are exposed to too much oxygen, they start going stale and losing aroma and flavor. She recommends storing coffee in a cool, dry place using an opaque, sealed container. For that, her go-to is the Planetary Design Airscape coffee canister.
Planetary Design Airscape Coffee Canister
This medium stainless steel coffee canister has a 500-gram (or just over 16 ounces) capacity, meaning it’ll be able to store a full 10- or 12-ounce bag of beans, which are the most common retail coffee sizes from high-quality roasters. (But if you want a smaller one, a 10-ounce option is also available.) “We’re partial to the Airscape canisters because they have some important features that set them apart,” Perry explains. “The inner lid on these canisters forces out all the air as you push them down. This feature doesn’t just create a seal — it actually removes the air from the container.” And removing the air, Perry said, is a critical part of slowing the oxidation process and keeping it fresh for longer. To achieve this, the Airscape uses a patented plunger lid to press oxygen out via a two-way valve.
The canister’s opaque exterior also helps lengthen the life of coffee beans. Perry points out that it prevents exposure to light, which is essential since, like with wine, light and heat speed up the decaying process. “You’ll want to keep your coffee stored away from sources of light (like open windows) and heat (like a stovetop),” Perry says. And with a variety of sizes and color options (like brushed silver, matte blue, matte white, and obsidian), its modern aesthetic should fit into nearly any kitchen. Amazon shoppers seem to agree, as it’s got over 6,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, with one reviewer writing that it was “the perfect solution” and that they “love that [it has a] minimalist design.”
Ultimately, if you care enough about your morning cup that you’re buying good beans, don’t undercut your investment by not taking care of them. Instead, pick up this coffee canister, and you can have super fresh beans for weeks.
