If you’re looking to take on bread baking as a hobby, focaccia is a great place to start. It requires minimal ingredients and active time to prepare, and Jennifer Garner just shared a classic recipe that’s both simple and delicious.
“This recipe is a gift you give to your future self,” Garner shared on her Instagram in a recent installment of her Pretend Cooking show. Fresh bread promises delicious leftovers, and focaccia is no exception. Here’s how the actor makes focaccia that only needs 4 ingredients—alongside salt, water and oil—to make.
In one bowl, Garner adds 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of yeast and 2 teaspoons of salt before whisking. She then folds in 2 cups of lukewarm water and forms the dough. Coating the dough in olive oil, Garner covers the dough and pops it in the refrigerator so it can rise overnight.
The next morning, the actor uncovers the dough, drizzles it with more olive oil and re-covers it, letting it sit in the fridge for one more whole day. This step is optional as the Alexandra Stafford recipe she is following calls for a 12-hour or up to three-day wait period. Either way, once the dough is ready to be used, she brings it to room temperature and lets it sit in the 9×13 pan she plans to bake it in. Once set, Garner sprinkles on fresh rosemary leaves to the top of the dough.
“You can use dried herbs, and if your kids don’t like herbs, you don’t have to use any at all,” she suggests. With a sprinkle of flaky sea salt and one more drizzle of olive oil, Garner pops the focaccia dough in the oven and lets it bake for 25 to 30 minutes. When the focaccia is golden, she lets it cool for 10 minutes before cutting up and serving.
“It’s delicious and it’s a hit,” she says at the end of the video. “It’s crispy and soft—perfect combo.”
Fans rave that the focaccia looks “yummy” and has “the perfect crunch,” and even some of our celebrity favorites left their thoughts.
“That looks like amazing focaccia and I’m making it tomorrow,” Ina Garten commented on the video. I mean, if it’s impressing Ina, you know it’s impressing us! And even some non-foodie celebs weighed in: actor Rita Wilson commented that this focaccia is “professional level” and actor Holly Robinson Peete wrote that she’s “salivating.”
Definitely try out this recipe if you’re looking for an easy yet tasty snack—it’s also the perfect base for a game-changing sandwich, and you can use it for this 5-star Chicken-Pesto Panini.
