Jack Black Is Ready For School Of Rock Sequel And Suggests A Great Title For It

It’s been 21 years since School of Rock premiered and eventually spawned a television spin-off and Broadway musical hit, but is it time for a sequel? Original star Jack Black thinks so. Mike White, the original writer for the movie, has been busy scripting HBO’s White Lotus series, so it may be a while before he can head back to the halls of Horace Green prep school.

Still, the film has developed a huge fanbase and helped usher in an era of musical comedy franchises like Pitch Perfect. Talking to JOE, Black says he’s ready for a sequel and already has an idea for the title, which is almost perfect.

“I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo,” he said. “I’m ready.”

The Electric Boogaloo subtitle comes from the breakdance movie sequel Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo from Cannon Films. The name has been parodied for almost 40 years but has ties to School of Rock since White wrote the original Breakin’.

A sequel was talked about back in 2008 that had director Richard Linklater and White returning as director and screenwriter again, respectively. The planned title was School of Rock 2: America Rocks, which picks up with Finn leading a group of summer school students on a cross-country field trip that delves into the history of rock music.

In 2012, Black stated the original plans fell apart creatively but added “never say never.” However last year, Black revealed that a direct sequel to School of Rock and a Tenacious D film was in development. “Yup. Both of them. Breaking news. We’re thinking about doing both of those.”

Maybe they can make like El Debarge and give this a second chance this time around.
