I’ve Never Liked Crocs, but Matty Matheson Just Convinced Me to Give Them a Chance

I used to own a pair of crocs, and I never liked them. Well, I liked them until I didn’t. They were light as air when I popped them on, and I felt like I finally understood why all of my friends swore by them during culinary school and their kitchen jobs. But, then while wearing them, I slipped in the kitchen. And then I slipped again. You get the idea. 

Still, people told me just how great their pairs are. I believed them, and I wasn’t sure the shoes had changed over time. That is until I saw this recent Crocs advertisement from Matty Matheson, chef and actor from “The Bear,” where he’s yelling, putting his Croc in soup, and then rinsing said shoe off in the sink.

In the midst of all of the chaos, I finally zeroed in on what I thought (and now know) were treads on the bottom of the Croc. And, low-and-behold, that is how Matty Matheson made me change my mind about the coveted footwear. 

The shoe Matheson is holding up in the ad is what I believe to be the Crocs Classic Slip Resistant Work Clog. I don’t quite know when this shoe came out, but I can tell you that the shoe I bought for the kitchen nearly a decade ago, I didn’t have this kind of sole.

These shoes continue with the classic lightweight design Croc buyers know and love. They have a closed toe with an adjustable ankle strap that’s fixed on with velcro, making them easy to slip on and off. The upper itself is waterproof —  which is Matheson dunking it in soup (or sauce) then cleaning it with some water. Those little holes at the top are fully enclosed, that way nothing falls through the shoe. 

But what really sets the shoe apart is its tread. It features extra grip in the top half and heel of the shoe — ideally preventing any and all slips. All of these features create a shoe that’s easy to wear for hours, without worrying about spills or trips, which is key in the kitchen.

The shoe comes in a few colors, including black, white, and navy on Croc’s website, though Matheson was holding up an olive green shade (I am predicting an upcoming collab). I don’t work in professional kitchens anymore, though these shoes would be useful while I am baking for long periods of time in my own kitchen, especially when I do take the occasional dessert order.

I am pleasantly surprised that the Crocs Classic Slip Resistant Work Clog exists, and I just might be adding a pair to my cart to see how non-slip they are.
