Impossible —The Final Reckoning’s Trailer Really Wants You To Know Tom Cruise Is Still That Dude

To jump-start our week, Tom Cruise, Paramount Pictures, and Skydance released a new trailer for their upcoming film, Mission: ImpossibleThe Final Reckoning.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is the direct sequel to the 2023 film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. Like its predecessor, this film sees Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt contend with a rogue AI hellbent on pitting the world’s surveillance and military-grade weaponry against itself. You can check out the trailer, which, in typical Mission: Impossible style, showcases Cruise running throughout and fighting baddies in increasingly perilous set pieces like the wings of a biplane.

The official synopsis for The Final Reckoning doesn’t reveal much about where the characters are in its ensuing plot from where we left off in Dead Reckoning. Instead, it opts to sell people on the film by way of Cruise’s goodwill alone. It reads, “Our lives are the sum of our choices. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.”

Going off the trailer’s almost somber mood, The Final Reckoning teases that the film will… well, bring some finality to the series’ eight movies. There’s a lot of putting the fate of the entire world on Ethan’s shoulders, a lot of reminders that he always puts the people he cares about first, and that might cost him. There is, of course, lots of Tom Cruise running in that way he runs. Rather than selling the film on a sense of bookending the franchise, its press release seems more hellbent on reminding people that Cruise is wearing the same wardrobe he did while “performing the epic stunt for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games closing ceremony.” For those that noticed, good on you. But for those reading between the lines, this can likely mean that moviegoers should expect yet another wild ass stunt for the 62-year-old actor to stun us with whenever the film’s promos get to the behind-the-scenes stunt portion of its press cycle

Other than the fact that the film will see Angela Bassett will re-join its cast–reprising her role as CIA chief Erika Sloane from 2018’s Fallout–The Final Reckoning sees the return of Cruise, Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom  Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Fredrick Schmidt.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning releases in theaters on May 23, 2025.
