It’s hard to believe that the month of May starts tomorrow because mentally, we’re still wondering when the supermarkets will put their unsold Valentine’s Day candy in the clearance section.
And after we get past all the Star Wars references that will hit on Saturday, May 4, then we can celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Sunday, May 5.
Cinco de Mayo is an annual commemoration of the Mexican army’s improbable victory over the bigger, better-armed French forces in the daylong Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 during the Franco-Mexican War. (And, as History.com notes, it is not a celebration of Mexico’s independence; that holiday falls on September 16.)
In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican culture — especially the food — and the burrito purveyors at Chipotle are marking the occasion with five straight days of free delivery. From Wednesday, May 1 through Sunday, May 5, orders placed through the Chipotle app, on Chipotle.com, and on Chipotle.ca can use the promo code CINCO24 to get $0 delivery fees.
According to the fine print on this offer — and there’s always a bit of fine print — customers must place an order of at least $10 USD or $12 CAD to qualify for free delivery, and the discount code cannot be used on catering or Burritos by the Box orders. The orders can only be placed through Chipotle’s websites or the Chipotle app, as $0 delivery is not available through DoorDash, Grubhub, or any other third-party delivery apps.
If you don’t have a go-to Chipotle order, or you want to try something new, the California-based chain has partnered with TikTok creator @Yanotom to showcase his viral menu hack, which the internet has named “The Chipotle Grilled Cheese Burrito.”
In order to make this at home, you’ll need to order a bowl from Chipotle — Yanotom ordered one with “literally every ingredient” — before emptying it all out into the biggest tortilla you can find. After wrapping everything up, Yanotom heats it in a pan, “sealing” the burrito with a layer of shredded cheese on both sides, and drizzling it with a combo of sour cream and vinaigrette dressing.
“The Chipotle Grilled Cheese Burrito hack is a delicious hack fans can recreate at home this Cinco de Mayo with our $0 delivery fee offer,” Stephanie Perdue, vice president of brand marketing at Chipotle said in a statement. “We love to amplify culinary menu innovations that showcase the creative combinations our fans come up with.”
And if you want to make a ton of Star Wars-related jokes while you’re melting cheese and heating your $0 delivery bowl, you can totally do that. As Yoda would say, “Lasts five days, this deal does.”
