Nothing excites a maniac more than a holiday—it all started with Black Christmas and Halloween, and now there’s a corresponding horror film to go with nearly every important calendar page, including the recent likes of Thanksgiving‘s slash-happy Pilgrim and Art the Clown’s Santa mayhem in Terrifier 3. Valentine’s Day has long been a favorite target on this list, but you don’t have to wait for threats of yet another My Bloody Valentine remake. Heart Eyes is nearly here!
Directed by Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within), and co-written by Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky), Michael Kennedy (It’s a Wonderful Knife, Freaky), and Phillip Murphy, Heart Eyes is about a killer whose mask looks like you-know-which emoji, and who targets couples on you-know-which romantic occasion.
As you can ascertain from those involved behind the camera—there’s definitely gonna be a body count, but you can count on some humor, too. Check out the first trailer here:
Why yes, that is a pair of 1990s horror veterans you see there: Jordana Brewster, who made her big screen debut in 1998’s The Faculty before entering the Fast and Furious universe (she was also in 2006’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), and Devon Sawa, who was already a genre icon for Final Destination and Idle Hands (and Casper!) before his recent character-hopping turn on the Chucky TV series.
Elsewhere in the cast are two younger but already familiar horror favorites: Mason Gooding (who survived the two most recent Scream films) and Olivia Holt (1980s time-travel tale Totally Killer). There also appears to be a satisfying array of knives slamming through doors and throats being punctured… plus some cutesy date-night settings gone horribly wrong (a carousel, a drive-in movie).
Happy Valentine’s Day! Don’t get killed, all right? Will you be checking out Heart Eyes when it hits theaters February 7?
