The only thing more fun than the Venom movies is seeing what the hell kind of nonsense Tom Hardy’s going to do in them. Since he’s pulling double duty as both Eddie Brock and the titular symbiote, the actor’s frequently engaged in some goofy, occasionally slapstick moments in the first two films, and a promo for the new one offers something new by having him rap.
Big movies often team with brands as part of their marketing, and for Venom: The Last Dance, Sony’s gone ahead and paired it with Monster energy drinks, and naturally, that means Eddie’s gotta get in the bootth. Listening to Hardy rap in his Venom voice is already funny on its own, just because the voice itself is so unlike him to begin with, but having Busta Rhymes there and give his approval makes it even more hilarious. It’s funny enough that it kind of makes you wish this wasn’t a one-off and that Hardy was going to do something musical for the threequel. He did have a brief rap stint, after all. (No, really.)
It must be said, the only real downside to this ad is the lack of Eminem. Both movies featured songs by the rapper that played over the credits—”Venom” for the first, and “Last One Standing” (featuring Skylar Gray, Polo G, and Mozzy) for Let There Be Carnage—that have a certain charm to them. If Marshall Mathers is doing a song for Last Dance, it’s still under wraps; both “Venom” and “Last One Standing” were released shortly before their respective films hit theaters, so there’s still time.
Eminem or no, Venom: The Last Dance will hit theaters on October 25.
