A new incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Homes is coming to Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios has announced that Guy Ritchie will executive produce and direct Young Sherlock, which will feature Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the title role.
The new show is not related to the 1985 Young Sherlock Holmes movie by director Barry Levinson and screenwriter Chris Columbus. Instead, the source material draws from Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels. The project marks a return to the character for Ritchie, who previously directed two Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey, Jr. as the famous detective.
Young Sherlock will present a new origin for the character, which starts when he is 19-years old. The show’s official description describes Sherlock as “disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed” when he is thrust into a murder case at Oxford University in which he is one of the suspects. From there, Sherlock discovers “a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”
“In Young Sherlock we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before,” said Ritchie in a statement. “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”
Earlier this year, Fiennes Tiffin co-starred in Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. His other credits include a leading role in the After films, The Loneliest Boy in the World, and a cameo as young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The older Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort was played by Fiennes Tiffin’s uncle, Ralph Fiennes.
Matthew Parkhill will be the showrunner and an executive producer of Young Sherlock, which will have an eight-episode first season. Prime Video hasn’t set a date for the series yet.
