PS5 Pro pre-orders went live today, but if you’re not willing to fork out AU$1,199 for a videogame console, rest assured you’re not alone. It’s an eye-watering price for a mid-gen refresh, and while it’d be nice to have, it’s far from an essential upgrade.
The good news is that, presumably to coincide with the rush to upgrade, Amazon is currently selling the PS5 Slim—both the disc and digital models—at heavily discounted prices. The PS5 Slim disc model is AU$675, down from AU$799.95, while the PS5 Slim digital model is AU$575, down from AU$679.95. If you’ve yet to buy a PS5, these are very tempting prices.
The question of whether one should go for the PS5 Pro is a complicated one that we address here, but to pull an important quote from that article, the questions to consider are: “How much of a difference will the average user spot in terms of frame rates and graphical fidelity? Are there games coming that I’ll actually want upgraded hardware for? If those same games are coming out on PC later, should I just wait and play them further down the road on an even beefier machine?”
If you’re a complete newcomer to the PS5 you’ve got a lot to catch up on. This year alone, we’ve seen modern classics like Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, not to mention brilliant third-party gems like Baldur’s Gate 3 and the forthcoming Silent Hill 2.
If you do want a PS5 Pro instead, Amazon is currently taking pre-orders on that model (and to reiterate, it’s AU$1,199 with free shipping). Whichever way you go, there’s plenty of fine games on the horizon.
