FDA Recalls More Than of 12,000 Cartons of Great Value Chicken Broth Sold at Walmart

If you recently purchased chicken broth at your local Walmart, then it’s time to check your pantry. 

In December, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a recall notice for more than 2,000 cases of chicken broth sold at Walmart stores across the United States under the name Great Value Chicken Broth. As the FDA explained, the recall notice was issued after it was discovered that the packaging had an issue that could lead to product spoilage. 

The recall includes 2,023 of the family-sized, 48-ounce cartons produced by Tree House Foods and sold across 242 Walmart locations in nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. The cartons have the Batch (Lot) Code 98F09234, Retail Unit UPC of 007874206684, and Case UPC of 078742066844.  They also have a Best if Used by date of March 25, 2026.  

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a spokesperson for Walmart shared in a statement with various publications. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted (products) from … select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”

Anyone who has purchased the chicken broth is encouraged to discard it immediately or return it to their place of purchase for a full refund. 

While there have been no reports of illness associated with this recall, it’s still important to discard of the product. As The Healthy reported, with bacterial spoilage, you are “unlikely to notice a change in the taste, smell, or appearance of your food,” making it difficult to tell if something has gone bad. However, if a product is contaminated with harmful bacteria, it could lead to food poisoning, thus leading to gastrointestinal symptoms. 

This isn’t the only recent Walmart recall. As Food & Wine previously reported, on December 31, the FDA also published a recall notice for Braga Fresh’s washed and ready-to-eat 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets due to the “possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.” That product was sold at Walmart locations across 20 states, so make sure to check your freezer for that, too.
