Elijah Wood Shares His Thoughts On LOTR’s “Meat’s Back On The Menu” Debate

One element of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film series that people like to joke about and discuss is how, in The Two Towers, one of the Uruk-hai leaders, Ugluk, proclaims, “Looks like meat’s back on the menu, boys!” It’s become something of a meme. But people have pointed out that, for Ugluk to say this, it also means that restaurants and menus also exist in Middle-earth. And if that’s the case, what else may be on their menus? We don’t have any definitive answers, but Frodo actor Elijah Wood has sounded off with his thoughts on the matter.

He said at Liverpool Comic-Con earlier this year that it’s best to not give the matter too much thought. As reported by Pop Verse, Wood used an example from Star Wars to make the point that everyone is thinking way too much about what was supposed to be a silly and fun line.

“This is a thing that happens in modern writing for old times. It happens a lot. In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there’s a bit when he’s talking to General Hux, and he says, ‘Hold for General Hux,’ like it’s a fucking telephone call. Sorry, let me patch you in….what are you talking about?”

For Lord of the Rings, it’s the same thing, Wood said.

“Meat is back on the menu…what menu are we talking about? It’s the kind of thing where you take liberty because it’s a fun joke. It’s a good bit of writing and it gets attention,” he said.

Absolutely it did get a lot of attention, as people are still discussing and laughing about the line some 20 years later.
