Disney Pixel RPG Is a Mobile Multiverse Starring Mickey Mouse

Disney’s upcoming mobile roleplaying game, called Pixel RPG, is now on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for preregistration. And if you sign up now, you could get in-game rewards when the game launches in September 2024.

The story will feature strange programs that break down the previously isolated worlds of the Disney universe. With the worlds merged, Disney characters from the various worlds unite to fight evil and restore order. You’ll be represented in gameplay by an avatar that will be customizable — one of the preregistration rewards is a hat.

The game is likely going to be what’s known as a mobile gacha. It’s being developed by Gung Ho Entertainment, a studio best known for Puzzles & Dragons, which is the godfather of mobile gacha RPGs. This is backed up by the game’s social media posts, which refer directly to “gacha pulls” in its marketing.

As with most gachas, the roster of characters will almost certainly expand over time, but Gung Ho has released the opening roster. Characters include Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Maleficent and Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Baymax from Big Hero 6, the Genie from Aladdin and Stitch from Lilo and Stitch.

The characters also appear to be drawn differently based on their property. For example, Aurora and Maleficent are drawn with a lot more detail than the board game-style art for Mickey Mouse and the rhythm game styling of Ariel.

As for the in-game rewards you can get for signing up for preregistration, according to the game’s social media accounts, you’ll get 300 Crystals — the game’s currency for gacha pulls — once preregistrations hit 10,000. The rewards scale up as more players join in up through 200,000 preregistrations.

What is Disney Pixel RPG and who can preregister?

Based on the game’s website, the game appears to be an 8-bit-style mobile gacha roleplaying game. Gachas are games where players summon characters using in-game currency that can typically be purchased with real money. It’s a gambling-esque system that doesn’t ensure success that you get the best characters, so you often have to retry to get the ones you want.

Its in-game mechanics are still a bit of a mystery. Players will be able to send their characters on expeditions to gather materials and resources, likely for upgrades. Combat appears to have gacha RPG mainstays like multiple enemy waves, fast-forward capabilities and auto battling to help players level up and gather resources more quickly. The game’s Google Play listing says that it’s designed for casual game play and RPG beginners.

For now, it appears as though the game is only available to preregister in some regions, including Japan and the US. Based on comments on social media posts, people are having trouble preregistering in Europe and South America.

Gung Ho Entertainment hasn’t listed the regions where the game is available for preregistration or whether it’ll open up to other regions before its official launch and didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Apple App Store and Google Play listings also say the game will be free to play with microtransactions. You can also follow the game on Facebook and Instagram to see the latest images.
