Del Taco’s New Menu Item Has People Running to the Drive-Thru

These days, fast food chains have to get creative to impress fans. Some look to the past for ideas, like Taco Bell, which recently brought back five fan-favorite items from five different decades. Others look to the present, taking inspiration from social media trends like Jimmy John’s latest menu addition—the Picklewich—the brand’s take on a viral TikTok sandwich.

Now, there’s another taco-based fast food brand getting in on the innovation. Del Taco is hopping on a hot trend that has nothing to do with Mexican-inspired munchies. Instead, the California-born chain is looking to Utah for inspiration.

Del Taco Introduces the Dirty Del

Meet the Dirty Del, Del Taco’s latest menu addition. The sweet sipper is a refreshing cup of Dr. Pepper that’s topped with vanilla shake mix and a sliced lime. Does that sound weird? Perhaps you need a little background. The new beverage is Del Taco’s take on Dirty Soda, a trending drink first popularized in the Mormon community.

America’s recent obsession with Dirty Soda (thanks in part to the reality show “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives”) has been popping up at other fast food chains, too. Recently, Sonic’s new winter menu dropped with the inclusion of two Dirty Sodas, the Buttery Brew and Sparkling Sugar Cookie Dr. Pepper. Jack in the Box sells three “twisted” sodas: the Dr. Jack Twisted Soda, Orange Swirl Twisted Soda, and Strawberry Twist Twisted Soda. And over at Taco Bell, fans crafted their owned off-menu Dirty Baja Blast to quell their cravings.

Earlier this year, Dirty Sodas even made their way into grocery stores when Coffee mate debuted its own Dirty Soda coffee creamer. The collaboration with Dr. Pepper is flavored with coconut and lime, supposedly the optimal pairing with the 23 flavors that define the soda.

It’s safe to say the Dirty Del has been attracting attention from online fans. “The Dirty Del is so good,” states one reviewer on a Reddit thread. On another thread devoted to the drink, a fan recounted, “I got it last night. I swear they handed me 90% shake mix and 10% Dr. Pepper, but I wasn’t complaining. I added my canned Dr. Pepper at home. They also forgot my lime…but it was still delicious. Much cheaper than the Twisted Jack at Jack in the Box as well.”

Though the Dirty Del isn’t the only Dirty Soda around, we can’t help but think that the drink sounds especially appealing alongside a Chipotle Carne Asada Burrito, Del Taco’s other recent menu addition. Now that’s a pairing worth running to the drive-thru for.
