Decades after they were originally released, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers are back inside the top 10 at the box office in the US.
For the weekend of June 7-9, the two films landed at No. 8 and No. 9 at the domestic box office, bringing in $2.456 million and $1.907 million, respectively, according to data from Box Office Mojo (via Collider). The films were re-released as part of a special promotion from Fathom Events and played in more than 1,500 theaters across the US.
The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers will be back in theaters this coming weekend, and the following weekend, and The Return of the King is joining them this weekend and next as part of the special event. As such, these numbers are expected to continue to grow throughout June.
You can visit the Fathom Events website to learn more and find a theater near you that’s showing the films. Theaters are playing the remastered and extended cuts of each film, so fans are getting the best possible theatrical experience with these re-releases.
These big box office numbers seem to demonstrate the staying power of The Lord of the Rings, which may bode well for this December’s new movie, The War of the Rohirrim, and the live-action The Hunt for Gollum in 2026.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has time and again mentioned how the company plans to focus on big, tentpole franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter going forward. To that end, The Hunt for Gollum is the first of multiple upcoming new live-action films that are in the works.
