Deadpool & Wolverine Is “Not A Commercial For Another Movie,” Ryan Reynolds Says

Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t a “commercial for another movie,” according to actor Ryan Reynolds. It’s a standalone film, he said recently on Good Morning America. That’s notable because many Marvel movies tell interconnected stories, with one film ending with a teaser for the next. Deadpool & Wolverine, though, will tell its own self-contained story, apparently.

“We recognized this was lighting in a bottle; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And also, we didn’t do a movie that is necessarily a commercial for another movie. It is a complete experience when you come to see Deadpool & Wolverine,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds went on to say that Disney gave him their “full support” to make Deadpool & Wolverine its own thing as opposed to being a part of a bigger MCU puzzle.

“It would be fun to sit here and say, ‘Oh Disney and Marvel, they just pushed back at every step.’ But they were the best partners. They were awesome. I can’t believe they let us get away with some of the stuff. It is a little shocking,” Reynolds said.

Deadpool & Wolverine is a team-up film featuring Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The two heroes come together to fight the villain Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), though specific plot details are being kept under wraps.

Logan’s Dafne Keen is back as X-23, with X-Men’s Aaron Stanford as Pyro, and Tyler Mane as Sabretooth for the first time since the original X-Men movie in 2000.

Shawn Levy, who previously directed Reynolds in Free Guy, is directing Deadpool & Wolverine. The movie comes to theaters on Friday, July 26, and reviews will begin to appear online today, July 23.
