Marvel’s one and only movie for 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine, is a smashing success at the box office. After its first weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine earned $211 million in North America and $233.3 million from international markets for a global start of $440+ million.
That’s the biggest opening for an R-rated movie of all time, surpassing a record held by 2016’s Deadpool. It’s also the biggest opening weekend for any movie so far in 2024, surpassing Inside Out 2 ($155 million).
Some of the other records for Deadpool & Wolverine include the 34th consecutive MCU movie to launch at No. 1 at the US box office; biggest opening weekend ever for July (beating The Lion King; $191.8 million); and biggest global opening weekend since Avatar: The Way of Water.
Additionally, movies from Disney are now responsible for 16 of the top 20 biggest opening weekends domestically of all time; MCU movies make up 11 of the top 20.
Reynolds and Jackman celebrated the money-making milestones with silly posts on social media, including Jackman’s post that recreates the popular Wolverine meme.
In a post to his Instagram Story, Reynolds said, “This is kind of hard to process. But thank you to everyone who went to see the film this weekend… wow.”
Deadpool & Wolverine opened this weekend at the same time that San Diego Comic-Con was happening. During the event, Marvel made a number of announcements, including the reveal that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU to play Doctor Doom in the next Avengers movie.
