There were a lot of Marvel cameos in Deadpool and Wolverine, including one from a 20th Century Fox X-Men spin-off that was never actually made. Regardless, Ryan Reynolds has shared a deleted scene featuring the character in question that suggests he could resurface again down the line.
One of the characters encountered by Deadpool (Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in the Void at the end of time is Channing Tatum’s Gambit. Tatum was attached to star in a Gambit solo film that couldn’t get out of development Hell before 20th Century Fox’s entertainment assets were sold to Disney in 2019. In the film, the fate of Gambit and a few other heroic allies was left ambiguous, as only Laura/X-23 (Dafne Keen) was seen again. But in the scene below, Gambit is clearly alive after the battle with Cassandra Nova’s army of villains.
In a follow-up post, Reynolds said that this scene is actually in the movie on one of the TVA monitors in the background. It’s subtle, but if you look in Gambit’s eyes then you can see the reflection of someone using a Sling Ring to open up a portal, presumably to rescue him. That’s why he’s smiling at the end of the clip. However, this raises another question. The Time Variance Authority would have used a door to retrieve anyone stuck in the Void. So who’s using the “Marvel Sparkle Circle” to rescue Gambit?
If there’s another Deadpool movie down the line, perhaps we’ll get our answer. But for now, it looks like Gambit was meant to live to fight another day.
Deadpool and Wolverine is still playing in theaters.
