Key Takeaways

  • Cheerios’ newest cereal is a Protein Cookies & Crème flavor.
  • Packed with protein, the cereal has 8 grams of protein per serving—16 with a cup of dairy milk.
  • General Mills is also launching two more new cereals this season.

We love new high-protein options, and General Mills is launching a new Cheerios cereal that flaunts more protein than your average bowl.

Cheerios Protein Cookies & Crème is the latest addition to the cereal variety’s protein line. It’s the third of its flavors, next to Cheerios Protein Strawberry and Cinnamon. With 8 grams of protein per serving, the cereal makes for a delicious protein-packed snack, but when paired with a cup of dairy milk, you’re looking at an easy high-protein breakfast boasting 16 grams of protein. And the thought of the Cookies & Crème flavor is so nostalgic when thinking of your favorite childhood cookie and milk combo.

While there is 11 grams of added sugar in this new Cookies & Crème cereal, this satisfying breakfast option is perfectly OK if you’re monitoring your added sugar intake throughout the day—or if you’re enjoying it as an occasional treat. At EatingWell, we believe that any food or drink can be included in a healthy eating pattern, as long as it’s done in moderation. And we love that this cereal is much more filling than its sugary competitors, so you won’t be constantly needing to refill your bowl—though wanting to is a different story!

For a lower-sugar option, General Mills has another cereal coming soon that may be up your alley. Cascadian Farm will be rolling out a No Added Sugar Cinnamon Apple Cereal that sounds like Apple Jacks’ healthier cousin. It’s made with zero added sugar, artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols—the sweetness comes from date powder and apple puree. Fun fact: the Cascadian Farm No Added Sugar Mixed Berry Cereal is a favorite packaged cereal of dietitian Sara Haas, RDN, LDN, so we’re sure this new flavor will get the RD stamp of approval.

And for more cereal fun, Nature Valley will be launching two cereals inspired by their fan-favorite crunchy granola bars. The Nature Valley Honey Almond and Apple Cinnamon cereals will embrace that signature crunch while being loaded with whole grains and fiber.

With a soft-launch at select grocery stores this month and an official rollout in May nationwide, keep an eye out for these boxes in the cereal aisle. We’re very excited for these healthier cereals—but in the meantime, we’ll be making this protein-packed Farro, Almond & Blueberry Breakfast Cereal to keep us satiated.
