CD Projekt Says Cyberpunk 2077 Will Return to Animation

Estimated read time 2 min read

Before Cyberpunk 2077’s redemption arc was completed, its anime spinoff helped pave the way for it to happen. Studio Trigger’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners really worked overtime to change opinions on the game, and blew everyone away back in 2022. With a critical and award-winning hit like that on its hands, CD Projekt Red has no plans of ditching animation.

During the developer’s Q&A at its recent earnings call, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski was asked what folks have been asking for two years: are we getting an Edgerunners season two? In the past, the studio said the show was a one-and-done, which Nowakowski reiterated here. But he also cryptically added the developer was “definitely planning to do more in terms of animation. Expect to see more for sure, but that’s as far as I can go right now.”

In past financial reports, CDPR said it would work to make Cyberpunk and The Witcher into transmedia properties. In Cyberpunk’s case, the studio said in 2022 it was open to teaming with other Japanese studios to create other anime set in the world of Mike Pondsmith’s RPG setting. But any plans that are being cooked up may be a ways off: from its recently posted financials from earlier this week, CDPR is gearing up to put most of its development attention on The Witcher 4 (codenamed “Polaris”), while Cyberpunk 2 (aka “Orion”) is in pre-production. Edgerunners worked because it came out in proximity to Cyberpunk 2077’s turnaround period, and it’s doubtful the studio would want a big gap between the eventual sequel and whatever new series it’s cooking up.

Even without another anime series, Cyberpunk is primed to grow continue beyond games. Last year, CDPR revealed it was teaming with Anonymous Content to give Cyberpnk a live-action TV show. We haven’t heard anything about it since then, but one way or another, it looks like the studio will make good on its dream of turning the sci-fi game into a marquis franchise.
