Earlier this month, Capcom released Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, which may potentially be the start of a new franchise. It’s also one of a growing number of games that are skipping a physical release altogether and going digital-only. However, Capcom wants to assure its fans that the video game publisher isn’t abandoning physical releases.
During a meeting for Capcom shareholders, the company stated, “Given that a significant number of end users demand physical games, we currently do not expect to eliminate physical products.”
In 2020, 80% of Capcom’s sales were digital, and the company stated that its long-term goal was to hit 90%. Capcom surpassed that mark in its 2023 financial year when digital sales accounted for 90.1% of the company’s total sales across consoles, PC, and mobile. For 2024, the company is projecting that digital sales will rise to 93% of its total.
The recently announced Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is getting a physical and digital release, but the long-term direction of the company suggests that the number of digital-only games will continue to rise. It’s not inconceivable that Capcom could eventually cut back on physical releases altogether. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be happening right now.
