Afro Samurai’s new steelbook Blu-ray collection releases November 12, and Amazon is offering a huge discount on preorders. You can preorder Afro Samurai: The Complete Series and the 2009 film Resurrection for only $28 (was $40) at Amazon. Crunchyroll is also offering a discount, but you’ll pay a couple bucks more ($30). Afro Samurai is one of the coolest anime of all time, and this new edition comes with an appropriately stylish steelbook case with art for the show on one side and the film on the other. This Director’s Cut features interviews with the cast, discussions with RZA, behind-the-scenes features, and more. You can also grab the Afro Samurai graphic novel box set for only $25 (was $40) at Amazon.
Adapted from the aforementioned manga written and illustrated by manga artist Takashi Okazaki, Afro Samurai tells the story of a lone samurai out for revenge. A tale about warriors fighting to possess the Number 1 headband–which is said to grant god-like powers and immortality–the only way to obtain it is to challenge and defeat its current owner in combat. Only the wearer of the Number 2 headband may challenge Number 1, and naturally, fighters from across the land regularly battle one another for the magical scrap of cloth.
The first Afro Samurai mini-series was animated by powerhouse studio Gonzo all the way back in 2007 and starred Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of Afro. The Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA was the music composer, and with the mini-series featuring incredible and brutal animation, it quickly became a cult-classic.
Resurrection followed up the series in 2009. This Director’s Cut version of the film includes more behind-the-scenes documentaries, interviews, and a look at the Afro Samurai video game that was released that same year.
As mentioned, if you’re interested in reading the original manga, a two-volume box set released last year, and Amazon has it for $25 (was $40).
