Earlier today, Sega held a Sonic-centric livestream called Sonic Central, announcing new stuff coming from the blue blur. One surprising inclusion was the announcement that Sonic and DC Comics are collaborating on a Justice League comic book run due out in March 2025.
During the 30-minute showcase, Sega reshared the fantastic animation of Shadow the Hedgehog as Batman, which the official Sonic X/Twitter account dropped out of nowhere on Batman Day. At the time, the animation left a lot of Sonic fans scratching their heads as to why the Sonic account would go out of its way to make such a slick video of Shadow as the Caped Crusader seemingly out of the blue. Now we know that was a promotional video for DC and Sonic’s upcoming comic book crossover run.
According to Sonic chief brand and business officer Ivo Gerscovich, the Sonic x DC collab will “start off” with a five-issue monthly comic book run penned by writer Ian Flynn. Although the stream went out of its way to omit the artist behind the run, it wasn’t shy about showing off the DC hero-flavored designs of its Sonic characters. Rather than having the Sonic bunch work alongside the Justice League, the unnamed comic book will instead see them suit up as iconic superheroes. Key among them are Sonic as the Flash, Shadow as Batman, Amy as Wonder Woman, Silver as Green Lantern, and Tails as Cyborg.
In addition to the five-issue DC Comic run, Sega also announced an upcoming collection edition of the comics and merchandise, including clothes, accessories, and toys, coming in the fall of 2025. At the butt end of the Sonic x DC Comics mash-up portion of the Sonic Central presentation, Gerscovich teased Sega getting its money’s worth out of the collab with the announcement that the festivities will continue into 2026 as well.
Seeing as Sonic’s collaboration is six months away, Sega satiated Sonic fans by concluding the stream with a special message from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler. While the video was equivalent to a sizzle reel recounting the previous Sonic films with commentary from production folks teasing more stories to come, it gave us a side-by-side look at Sonic and Shadow by the film’s logo. We even got a little clip of Fowler outside of what could only be a Paramount Pictures production lot with dancing Chao mascots. Shout out to the Chao fans out there.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 releases in theaters on December 20.
