The first gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham Shadow–the next Arkhamverse game coming exclusively to Meta Quest 3 headsets–has been revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Like the Arkham games, you’ll be able to punch goons, clobber enemies with Batarangs, and sneak up on people, all in virtual reality.
Developer Camouflaj says it has drawn inspiration from Rocksteady’s Arkham games, as you’ll be able to chain attacks and explore intricate levels. As you’d expect, you’ll need to master all of Batman’s skills in order to save Gotham City, which finds itself under attack from the Rat King, a classic Batman enemy who has gathered a cult to do his bidding. Interestingly, it looks like Batman will need some help, as the trailer ends with him meeting Otis Flanagan. Despite all his rage, he’s still just a Rat-Catcher stuck in a cage.
Batman: Arkham Shadow is set between the events of Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum, and while this Caped Crusader is still young, he’s becoming increasingly confident in his skills and his role as Gotham’s protector.
A few familiar faces–and voices–will be seen and heard in Arkham Shadow, as Troy Baker and Tara Strong will return to the series as Harvey Dent and Harleen Quinzel, respectively. Khary Payton voices Flanagan, and is a veteran voice actor with a list of credits longer than the Joker’s criminal record. He’s also voicing Azzuri, the Black Panther of the World War II era, in the upcoming Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
Batman: Arkham Shadow was first revealed in May, and is the first Batman: Arkham game to be released since 2016’s Batman: Arkham VR. This iteration of the Dark Knight has also appeared in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League–it’s also set in the Arkhamverse–a live-service game that has been a critical and commercial flop since it release earlier this year.
