Samsung has recalled over 1.1 million of its Slide-In Electric Ranges because the knobs on the front of the ranges can be activated if they are accidentally nudged by humans or pets.
In a recall notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in the past 11 years, Samsung has received over 300 reports of the knobs being unintentionally activated, and the recalled ranges have been connected to “approximately 250” house fires. Eighteen of those fires resulted in “extensive property damage,” and 40 injuries were reported to the company. Seven of the reported incidents resulted in the death of pets that were present at the time of the fires.
There are 30 different model numbers included in this recall of Samsung Slide-In Electric Ranges; a full list of the affected model numbers can be found on the CPSC’s website. (The model number is printed either on the upper left corner of the oven door, or inside the lower storage bin.)
The recalled ranges were sold on Samsung.com and at Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and other big box retailers from May 2013 through August 2024. Customers who have one of the recalled ranges should contact Samsung for a set of free knob locks or knob covers that will prevent the burners from being accidentally turned on.
“Samsung remains committed to delivering high-quality, innovative and safe products that enhance customers’ lives,” the company said in a statement. “Introduced in April of 2024, all new Samsung slide-in ranges include the industry’s first built-in three-step Precision Knobs, requiring a natural ‘pinching’ action before the ‘push and turn’ to ensure knobs are only activated intentionally.”
Until receiving the knob covers or locks, the CPSC advises anyone who has one of the recalled ranges to keep their children and pets away from the knobs, to make sure the knobs are off before leaving the house, and not to store or stack anything on top of the range when it is not being used. In addition, any customer with a WiFi-enabled range can use the “Cooktop On” notification in the Samsung SmartThings app to ensure they receive an alert if the burners have been activated.
