It’s always been possible for me to travel for a good dish, but to travel with a good dish is another story. Foil and plastic wrap let me down time and again, causing me to lose hours of cooking to potholes and unsafe drivers. It was a nightmare trying to bring food over to friend’s houses until I discovered OXO’s glass bakeware line back in 2020.
I bought the brand’s pie plate and lid bundle in preparation for a weeks-long baking frenzy to celebrate the release of Erin Jeanne McDowell The Book on Pie. I needed something that would be durable enough to withstand all of the baking I was about to do, easy to travel with so I could bring extras to friends (when I was feeling generous), and conducive to storing leftovers (when I was feeling less generous). This plate and lid checked every box. When I came out the other side of the cookbook, I immediately purchased more of OXO’s products, including this $23 baking dish that became an instant favorite of mine.
OXO Good Grips 3-Quart Glass Baking Dish with Lid
At 13 inches long by 9 inches wide, it’s the perfect size for all of my summer cooking projects. It works just as well for the fruit crisps I whip up with produce from my neighborhood farmers market as it does for the lobster mac and cheese I bring to backyard cookouts. And when I’ve finished cooking, the BPA-free lid with its leakproof seal turns storing, stacking, and transporting into an afterthought.
With more than 13,500 five-star ratings at Amazon, it’s obvious that I’m not alone in my admiration for OXO’s product line. One satisfied customer called them the “perfect” baking dishes, while another added that they love the “slight curve” of the lids because it leaves room for food underneath. Still another commented that they plan to use the pie plate “for years to come.”
Years, but more likely decades. These dishes are made of borosilicate glass, which can withstand extreme temperature changes — think freezer to oven, oven to refrigerator, refrigerator to microwave, microwave to dishwasher — without shattering. The glass also can’t stain and won’t absorb odors.
Thanks to this $23 baking dish, I’m just as likely to travel with food as I am to travel for food. I can say without a doubt that I would have happily paid much more for the peace of mind it’s brought me. Check out the rest of OXO’s glass bakeware line below.
