Wolverine’s Deadpool 3 Suit is So Good, It Brought People to Tears

Estimated read time 2 min read

Among the many demands X-Men fans had for the original Fox movies, putting Hugh Jackman in Wolverine’s yellow-and-blue costume was fairly high on the list. The original trilogy put its characters in black leather because The Matrix was popular at the time, and that (plus a tank top) basically became the signature movie suits throughout Wolverine’s tenure in the franchise. Deadpool & Wolverine is the first time Jackman actually wears the suit, and it got even the people working on the movie feeling some type of way.

During a recent press event, executive producer Wendy Jacobson recalled the first time Jackman donned the classic suit for a pre-shooting camera test. She called the sight of him walking out in that suit “one of the craziest things,” to point some of its crew were full-on weeping. “Seeing both of those guys, first of all, in costume together was just mind-blowing,” she recalled, “but Hugh walking out in the yellow and blue, I mean, there were grown men sobbing on set.” That affirmed to her that getting the suit in the movie “was a very special thing” to make happen.

Previously, director Shawn Levy talked about how he worked like hell to get that suit in the movie. He didn’t just want to put Jackman in the costume, he wanted to “make goddamned sure…we get it right,” he said in September. Doing that meant going through multiple versions to make sure it looked good, something he felt pretty proud of back then. And it does look good; one of the weird things about the X-Men movies is how they defined the superhero movie genre while also flinching away from its more comic book-y elements. Both X-Men: First Class and The Wolverine had more fantastical costumes, then the next movies pivoted back to leather. It sure is something to see Jackman in the classic costume, but it’s also a reminder of how weird Fox’s X-movies treated their source material.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26, look for io9’s review in the next few days.
