If you’re like me, it takes a long time to find something you truly love. It took me, like, ten years to stumble on the perfect gym shoe, and I still haven’t found an office chair that I think is especially comfortable. I really enjoy my TV, but I know I could do better (when I win the lottery, maybe). When it comes to wine, one could say I’ve searched long and hard for a glass that feels perfect. I’m certainly no snob — for years, I drank wine out of passed-down, bargain-bin glasses I acquired from a family member when I was in grad school; even these days, I love to sip nice wine out of everything from port glasses to Duralex tumblers. When it came to fully committing to a set of good wine glasses, though, I knew I had to wait for the right thing.
My criteria weren’t outrageous: I wanted something with a stem, so my hand wouldn’t affect the temperature of chilled wines, and I wanted a wine glass with a slightly tapered opening to enhance the nose. I also craved something that looked unique and wouldn’t feel like just another wine glass. Finally, since I was a bachelor with a small kitchen at the time of this search, I wanted something that could be used for all of my favorite wines, from carbonic Pinot Noir and Gamay to Chenin Blanc and Gewürztraminer.
For years, I figured the right glass would simply appear before me one day — and finally, it did. I was walking the aisles of a home and kitchen store, and saw these strikingly handsome glasses on a shelf. I knew immediately that they fit the bill. I bought the couple that were available, and then went home and ordered more. Those glasses were the Schott Zwiesel Tritan Crystal all-purpose wine glass. And they’re currently on sale at Amazon for $16 each.
Schott Zwiesel Tritan Crystal All-Purpose Wine Glass Set of 2
I’m going to be honest: I’ve broken a wine glass or two in my day. It just happens. Fortunately, these glasses are super reasonable, and easy to find. More than that, though, I just think they’re stunning. I love the angular, geometric look — it feels very deliberate and stylish to me. These glasses are on the lighter side, but feel really sturdy and powerful in my hand, maybe because of their design. They trap aromas really well, letting me savor the nose on my wine after a nice swirl, which feels great and never precarious, due to the glass’s wide bowl and smaller opening. To me, it’s a perfect glass, and entirely worth investing in.
Whether you’re looking to upgrade your home wine situation, offer a nice housewarming or wedding gift to a loved one, or give that special Cabernet-enjoyer in your life — Father’s Day is nigh, hint hint — something to savor for years, these masterpieces from Schott Zwiesel are the right way to go.
