We Haven’t Seen The Last Of A Dead Acolyte Character, It Seems

Estimated read time 2 min read

This week, the third episode of The Acolyte shed some light on the origins of Mae and Osha, while tying into the deeper lore of Star Wars. It also revealed that the two young girls come from a coven of Force witches who were at odds with the Jedi. And while the episode appeared to show the final fate of the coven, at least one member will make a return appearance before the season ends.

Warning: the following contains spoilers from the first three episodes of The Acolyte on Disney+. If you haven’t seen the episodes or don’t want to know who is coming back, stop reading now.

Episode 3 took place 16 years before the rest of the series and introduced Jodie Turner-Smith as Mother Aniseya. While the twins, Osha and Mae, call Aniseya, their mother, we learn that it was actually Mother Koril (Margarita Levieva) who gave birth to them. However, Aniseya claims credit for creating them without a father.

During a profile of Turner-Smith in The Hollywood Reporter, the story reveals that she will reprise her role as Aniseya in episode 7 of the series. This is significant because Aniseya was believed to have been killed alongside the rest of her coven in episode 3. The episode depicts the death of the coven, but it doesn’t reveal exactly how they died. Mae does start a fire in an attempt to kill her sister, but that seems unlikely to have been enough to wipe out an entire coven of Force witches. The Jedi likely played a role in their deaths, which may be why Jedi Master Torbin (Dean-Charles Chapman) asked Mae for forgiveness and willingly drank a fatal dose of poison in episode 2.

Since Turner-Smith is set for at least one more episode, it will presumably be in a flashback that depicts the truth about Aniseya’s demise. Or perhaps viewers will learn that she somehow survived the destruction of her coven.

The next episode of The Acolyte will premiere on Disney+ on Tuesday, June 18.
