Walgreens Cuts Prices on 1,300 Popular Items

If you spend any amount of time outdoors in the summer, then you’re well aware of how useful Walgreens can be in a pinch: Its grocery section carries grilling staples and beach snacks alike, and its home goods section includes coolers, beach chairs, pitchers, disposable tablecloths, bug spray, and sunscreen. And in a season of every major retailer announcing summer savings events, Walgreens isn’t about to be left out: It has announced price cuts on 1,300 items, comprising both name brand and private label products.

“Walgreens understands that our customers are under financial strain and struggle to purchase everyday essentials,” said Walgreens executive Tracey D. Brown in a press release. “Listening to our customers and offering quality products, value, and convenience every day is our continued commitment.”

The discounts include a 30% reduction in price on Nice! brand potato chips and pretzels and a nearly 20% discount on coolers and box fans. Walgreens’ Summer of Savings aims to compete with Target, Aldi, Amazon, and Walmart — all of which have announced similar markdowns to usher in the warm weather months.

MarketWatch notes that beyond appealing to budget-conscious shoppers, Walgreens’ discounts also aim to revive the drugstore chain amidst one of its lowest stock dips of the past 27 years. This, MarketWatch says, is due to Americans’ current economic outlook, which has caused them to “[shift] their discretionary spending away from the drug channel.” The stock price has fallen more than 40% in 2024 alone. At stores like Walgreens, it’s typically understood that the convenience comes with a built-in price markup. By upending that notion, Walgreens stands a chance to lure even those consumers who might remain skittish about the economy.

The Walgreens sales include items well beyond the scope of summer staples. The price of gummy vitamins have been reduced by 11%, Clean & Clear foaming facial cleanser is 12.5% off, and Eucerin hand cream is 18% off.

Additionally, the rollout of the Summer of Savings will have various gamified elements. Starting in July, Walgreens will bring back myW Days, a limited-time event in which rewards members can redeem personalized offers and earn bonus points on certain purchases. For instance, spending within the groceries, snacks, and beverage categories might earn additional cash rewards, and each member’s top shopped category earns a higher percentage of rewards. The myW Days event first launched in July 2023.

This summer, your go-to retailers want to make sure you spend less—not just for your benefit, but for their own.
