An active nationwide recall was announced on Gibson Farms Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts, according to the Food and Drug Administration. This is due to an E. coli O157:H7 contamination that is linked to 12 reported illnesses, including 7 hospitalizations.
The walnuts affected were distributed and sold in the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The product was sold in bulk bins at local and regional grocery chains. The FDA has launched an investigation to determine the source of this outbreak, which may result in more recalls.
If you have recently bought shelled walnut halves and pieces from the above states and impacted stores, dispose of them immediately or return them to your place of purchase. E. coli O157:H7 can cause severe symptoms of illness like diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea and vomiting. The infection can be deadly for those age 65 or older and for young children, so talk to your health care provider as soon as possible if you believe you or your family could be exposed.
